Who Sent That Message?
You must have received messages from various service providers like Banks, Pizza stores and such other vendors. Apart from being annoying at times, there is another thing that is common between these messages. Instead of showing sender’s numbers they show some alphabetical codes, for e.g. TD-TXNALERT or LM-IBIBO etc.
Have you ever wondered what these codes stand for? I did a little research on this and found some interesting information to share.
The code is of the format XY-SrvName. Here X represents the mobile operator sending the message, and Y represents the region. SrvName is the name under which the vendor using the bulk message facility is registered with the mobile operator. Sounds confusing? It’ll be clear in a minute.
Let’s take the example of ICICI bank. When you receive a message from ICICI bank, the sender name displayed is TM-ICICIBANK. Here T is the code for the mobile operator, M is the region from which the message is sent and ICICIBANK is the name under which ICICI Bank sends its message.
Now the obvious question is how to decipher this code. I have tried to document a list of all codes that I found.
Mobile Operator Code
Mobile Operator | Code (X) |
Aircel | D |
Bharti Airtel | A |
BSNL | B |
BPL Mobile/Loop Telecom | L |
Idea Cellular | I |
MTNL | M |
Reliance Communication | R |
Reliance Telecom | E |
Spice Communication | P |
Tata Teleservices | T |
Vodafone | V |
Region Code
UPDATE: There was a small error in the list below which has been updated now after Deepak Gupta pointed it out. Thanks Deepak
Region | Code (Y) |
Andhra Pradesh | A |
Mumbai | M |
Delhi | D |
Punjab | P |
Jammu & Kashmir | J |
Gujarat | G |
Tamil Nadu | T |
Kolkata | K |
Bihar & Jharkhand | B |
U.P.(West) & Uttaranchal | W |
U.P. (East) | E |
Assam | S |
Haryana | H |
So if you receive a message with starting two letters as RJ, it means it is sent through Reliance Communication from J&K region.
Why Such A Format Is Used?
The reason this format is followed is so that TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) can keep a tab on the operators and service providers and attend to customer’s grievance if they complain against bulk messages.
I have tried to include almost all the codes that I came across, but I might have missed some. So if you come across a code that is not in the above list, do share it with us through your comments and I’ll update the list.

Thanks "Carpenter Oak"
A little off topic- please use your name instead of keywords. It makes the comment look as spam due to which it gets deleted at times. Also it looks a bit weird calling someone "Carpenter Oak"
I'm not sure about the US Barbell. Will let you know if I find some information.
