Get Address Proof Card From Post Office

india-post-logo One major problem that I faced when I moved to Hyderabad for job was to get a local address proof. Because without a local address proof, you can’t think of getting basic facilities like phone connection, internet connection, gas connection or even bank account.

Wish I knew it then that I could get an address proof card from my nearest post office!!

Yes you read it right. Indian Postal Department started this service some time back, wherein they provide you with an address proof card which you can use anywhere as a valid proof. But as is expected from government services, they do not have a proper notification regarding this on their official website.

So how do you get one? Read on to get answers to all your questions.

Procedure For Getting The Address Proof

  1. Obtain the address proof form from your post office by paying 10 (or you can also download it from here).
  2. Fill the form and submit it to the post office along with a fee of 240/- (250/- if you downloaded the form).
  3. A postman is sent by the postal department to verify the address.
  4. After the verification is over, you’ll be issued an address proof card, as shown below:

address proof

Salient Features

  • As the card has your photo as well as address so you can use it both for identity proof and address proof.
  • The card is valid for a period of 3 years after which you’ll have to get it renewed. The renewal fees is 140/-.
  • In case the card is lost, you can get a duplicate card by paying a fee of 90/-
  • This facility is not available with all the post offices. So you’ll have to find the nearest post office in your city that provides the id card. However this shall not be a problem in big cities, as almost all the post offices have this facility available.

What Is the Use When Most of Us Have Passport/Voter ID Card etc?

True. But for working professionals and students who have to change cities frequently, passport, voter id card or driving license doesn’t serve the purpose. All these id cards have your permanent address, but not your local address and so cannot be used as address proof. For address proof you are generally asked to provide a copy of rent agreement, electricity bill etc. Isn’t this a better choice?

With Indian Rail providing refund through online TDR and now Postal department providing address proof, it looks like Indian government is going for a complete make over of its departments. Open-mouthed

Are you going to apply for the address proof through post office? Or have you already done so? Do share your views through the comment-form below.

dude one of my friends told that when we shop using our debit/credit card than the merchant gets a UID which he can use to charge us more ,even without swiping d card again. The usecase he told was of paying tip to waiters…if we wanna give tip we just add some amt to the final bill(debit card statement) they bring to us and they will charge it without needing our card..It would be good if you can investigate the validity of such a feature.

Yeah I have seen a column for tip present in debit card statement that they bring. But I didn't knew they can charge the amt without needing our card. Will surely check if this is actually true. Thanks for the tip buddy :)

For working men & women in other cities than place of residence, how does P.O. verify the address if he/she isn't at home during daytime? The verifier has to find the person at the address, right? How do you handle this issue?

Before signing the slip, place a dash in the tip position in which they cannot add any money for the tip. Thats all. that's what i will do, everytime. Yes, they can get the tip by adding amount in the tip part with out your card!!!

Ideally you need to be there. But I think even if you are not there, your land lord can confirm it. Or otherwise the postman will leave a message for you so that you can visit the post office and mutually agree on a time.

Thanks for the tip Siva :). I checked this thing last time when I went to a restaurant and as Rohit and you mentioned, if you enter an amount in Tip column, they can charge it without needing to swipe the card again.

    Dear all

I am one of the Address proof card holder. valid up to 29.06.2013.

While, marketing Address proof card by postal dept, it was informed me, this card is, can be used for address proof for various transaction. But I am facing still same difficulty for this card is accepted by anywhere.

    1. Bank ac opening / change of address.

Both govt owned banks / as well as private banks are NOT accepting for a resident proof , says that this is NOT valid proof / NOT in our list Documents

    2. Appling telephone connection / mobile connection.

Both BSNL and other mobile operators like…Airtel, reliance, tata Indicom etc… NOT accepting for a resident proof, says that this is NOT valid proof / NOT in our list Documents

    3. Appling Ration card – NOT accepting for a resident proof , says that this is NOT valid proof / NOT in our list Documents

    4. Appling voter ID card – NOT accepting for a resident proof , says that this is NOT valid proof / NOT in our list Documents

    5. Appling Driving license – NOT accepting for a resident proof , says that this is NOT valid proof / NOT in our list Documents

6.passport office also NOT accepting YOUR CARD FOR A ADDRESS PROOF…

Totally absolutely USE LESS… AND WASTE OF MONEY….

In general, NO PLACE WILL ACCETING THIS CARD FOR A VALID ADDRESS PROOF. Then what is the use of obtaining this?

I requested tamilnadu post master general to issue a circular to all the public / private Dept /govt dept especially public dealing dept to accept this card A VALID ADDRESS PROOF

but ,no responce , and no use….

any one planing to apply for the same, think twice……

    Thank you,

    Jayaram Singh

I am submitted my wife address proof application to Post office at MIDC Andheri East – Mumbai with photo and attestation of doctor but they (post office) are asking please provide the address proof (ie., Ration card etc) and based on this we will issue i card.

Please correct me this process is correct, even though i am having ratiion card but address is chennai Tamil nadu. As per the process if it is address proof not available then only we need to apply address proof card from post office

      Hi Swathi,

Ideally you should. But I would suggest that you confirm it once with your post office before submitting the application.
