One of the main reasons for me to read classics is that I get a chance to meet and experience characters/situations of yore. But Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, managed to turn the tables on me! I started reading Jane Eyre because this is one of those books which is featured on almost all of the must-read lists! And things being the way they are (like those Oscar movies, which are supposed to be really good and all that but they are the ones which go above my head!) I didn’t expect many things out of it, other than the fact that I can boast that I’m one of those people who has read it! 😛
The book starts out normally enough. Reader, let me warn you that to enjoy this wonderful specimen of a book, you’ll have to wade through dreary deserts initially. I had a tough time finishing the first few chapters when Jane Eyre is introduced. But after that, I had the time of my life knowing Jane, a woman who lives in the 1800s. The most astounding aspect of this book is that there’s this woman who is separated from me by a couple of hundred of years but yet is so similar to me! A part of every girl who is brought up in the twentieth century will recognize her!! I’m quoting an excerpt just so that you understand what you are getting into when you read Jane Eyre:
It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it
And the book talks about just that, making decisions, not compromising your principles and finding your personality while making those choices.
Jane Eyre focuses a lot on finding self and in her words “Love thyself to love others, is the mantra”. I love this book because of the number of times she thinks about herself and does things to move forward in life, and this is stuff that we as modern women go through everyday!
This is going into my Fan-Effing-Tastic shelf and hope that you give it a try too and in turn love Jane Eyre like I do!
